In September of 2017, accompanied by a flock of friends, Jeffrey and I boarded Lindblad’s National Geographic Islander for a week of explorations in the volcanic archipelago of the Galapagos Islands.  Our superb Ecuadorian naturalists introduced us to a diversity of wildlife and plant species as we traveled from island to island. 

We swam with sea lions and fur seals and kayaked with Galapagos penguins and rays. Each island with its isolated terrain revealed unique animals. Marine iguanas on Espanola, Floreana Flamingos, the Giant Tortoises of Santa Cruz, red sesuvium, giant prickly pears and Land Iguanas on South Plaza, and rookeries of Red, Blue and Nazca Boobies on Genovesa.

Unique to each island were Darwin Finches and Mockingbirds. Ubiquitous were the vicious Frigatebirds dive bombing other birds to purloin their prey. Spectacular sitings of nature in action greeted us every day.... moments after the birth of a sea lion pup on Santa Fe, I watched as Galapagos Hawks swarmed in to feast on the afterbirth.
